few days ago I saw on TV a couple of senators fighting and saying things because one was in favor of the death penalty for kidnappers and the other in favor of the decriminalization of abortion . Both issues are quite fashionable lately, at least for those have the interest to listen or read the news regularly, so I decided to express my opinion on these two issues as important and controversial. I will be brief and direct, today I have no desire to take a long roll.
on the death penalty
I am not against the death penalty. I think there are many people who commit crimes serious enough to merit it. Kidnappers who torture and maim their victims, drug hitmen to kill rivals like the innocent, mentally ill serial murderers, terrorists, genocide, etc. Such people should not be kept in prisons or mental institutions for forty or fifty years, generating costs the government until the day of his death. A run-time could be a more effective, economical and exemplary.
Now, what should implement the death penalty in the Mexican judicial system? Definitely not. In this country every day, many innocent people are imprisoned by many different factors: because we need to blame someone when not given with the true responsible for any crime, political slogan of a rival, or by sheer incompetence of those charged with providing justice. Now imagine what would happen if they implemented the death penalty. How many innocent die for having been unjustly accused? How many heads would roll by the government's need to prove that 'is working'? It would be a perfect medium for those influences could legally dispose of enemies or people uncomfortable.
In my opinion, the Mexican justice system is still far from being an entirely reliable, and so long as we can not entrust the responsibility of administering death. It would be like giving a loaded machine gun to a blind police.
On abortion
This is for many people, another for administration of the death, but the context is very different.
Am I in favor of abortion? No. Do I support the decriminalization? Yes, for one simple reason: women seeking abortion do is legal or not. They do so in clandestine clinics in poor security conditions do with midwives, self-treatment, and some people even introduce clothes hooks or the like. Some do not suffer consequences, but many die and many others suffer consequences, like being unable to become pregnant again.
Would you like to lose and a daughter, a girlfriend or a friend? It's easy to think that one is not going to happen, but it happens. Obviously the best thing is that as parents, we educate our children to prevent them from being in a situation like this, but we will never be safe exempt. It would be better to know that in the worst case, if they decide to go that route, they will be adequately met.
I do not think that abortion is right, nor do I think that society should give the "go ahead." I'm sure it's best to avoid unwanted pregnancies through sex education and contraceptive use (note that many who are against the legalization of abortion are also against the use of contraceptives). But in the worst of scenarios, when all else has failed, I think we have to offer a less risky alternative for women who choose abortion even if it means risking your health and even lives, for there are, and always will be.
